About the instructor
I am Anna Huthmaker and I am the favorite daughter of the Huthmaker Family. After a shaky few years playing childhood violin, I discovered my true musical place in this world and have spent the last 33 years playing the ‘cello and string bass. My first university degree is in Cello Performance and my second is in Double Bass Performance.
After my education was completed, my parents lured me into managing our family shop, Huthmaker Violins, where I became the low strings specialist and resident “Bow Queen.” I have studied bow restoration and making with Lynn Hannings, George Rubino, Robert L. Ray, David Tamblyn and William Salchow. I love bows and spend most of my time at the shop restoring wonderful violin, viola, cello and bass bows from all over the country.
In addition to my duties at the shop, I fell in love with teaching bow rehair around the world. After trips to Haiti, Ecuador and Cuba, I co-founded “Luthiers without Borders-USA” (lsfusa.org) with Master Violin Maker Ute Zahn. Together we created a years-long curriculum at the University of Trinidad and Tobago teaching university students instrument and bow repair. We are proud to say that our hard work, along with the very hard work of our students, resulted in both a Bow Repair business and a Luthier Business opened by three former LSF-USA students.
In 2020, I took over as the owner of Huthmaker Violins and continue to passionately dive into entrepreneurship, education, and service. Named a “Top 100 Dealer” by the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) two years in a row, I have proudly advocated for music education on Capital Hill and supported organizations that protect our environment and help bring music and instruments into the lives of others.
